Experiential Update
Lindsey Selected as Faculty Preceptor of the Year

Each graduating class is given the opportunity to nominate a faculty preceptor who has done an outstanding job in educating students and serving as a role model for practice and for life.
Several faculty members were nominated for this honor, which is a testament to the quality of faculty at Union University. Top nominees this year were, Dr. Kim Lindsey, Dr. Andrew Martin, and Dr. Melanie Michael.
The faculty member selected by the Class of 2014 as the Faculty Preceptor of the Year recipient was Dr. Kim Lindsey. Dr. Lindsey serves as a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Critical Care at Jackson Madison County General Hospital.
These are some excerpts taken from nomination letters describing Dr. Lindsey. This faculty member "forced me to become a better student on my APPE by pushing me to make recommendations directly to the physicians [by] myself and by making me think critically and on-the-spot about every patient."
This faculty member volunteered to mentor me through a research project. She "gave so much of her personal time to aid me with this project that carried on for months. Words would never be enough to express how much I appreciated this."
This faculty member "is also an exceptional example of what a pharmacist should look like. She is very intelligent, and she wants to give back to the profession. Her rotation is very challenging, but at the same time so rewarding. You learn an incredible amount in one short month."
This person "has such a big heart and cares so much about each student.
"... a great professor, a great practitioner and overall a great person! I cannot say enough good things about her."

Pace Selected as IPPE Preceptor of the Year

This year's IPPE Preceptor of the Year was awarded to Dr. DeAnne Pace. Dr. Pace graduated from Samford University where she received her Pharm.D. Degree. She currently owns and manages Lexington Discount Drugs in Lexington, TN. Dr. Pace has been a preceptor for Union University since 2010. She has precepted numerous students over the years as she offers an exciting community rotation for students.
The IPPE Preceptor of the Year award is an award nominated by students. This year, Dr. Pace was nominated by several students. Below are some comments from those students.
"Dr. Pace spent just as much time as needed to make sure I received a good learning experience."
"I learned as much from Dr. Pace as I would have in the classroom."
"Dr. Pace is just awesome! She is involved in the community. I have never seen an independent pharmacist set up so many flu clinics and health screens at senior centers and schools."
Dr. Pace makes everyone feel very comfortable in the pharmacy even when you are new to the pharmacy world. She teaches you how the pharmacy works and trains you to be a pharmacist and not let you be just another tech. She takes time to ask questions and teach you about brand/generics, class, side effects and random facts even when we are busy."
Dr. Pace is definitely a rock star pharmacist!"
We are grateful to have Dr. DeAnne Pace on board as a preceptor at Union University School of Pharmacy. She is a dedicated pharmacist who has a servant’s heart. She is an excellent teacher and mentor.
Hopkins Named 2014 APPE Preceptor of the Year

Each graduating class is given the opportunity to nominate an APPE preceptor who has done an exceptional job at teaching, modeling, and coaching students in preparation for pharmacy practice. This year's APPE Preceptor of the Year was awarded to Dr. Jamie Hopkins.
Dr. Hopkins is a Clinical Pharmacy Coordinator and Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Infectious Disease at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. She is a graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy and she completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Memphis before joining the pharmacy staff at Jackson General.
Student nominations included the following comments:
She "was very knowledgeable and easy to approach as my preceptor. She serves as a great role model for student pharmacists with her compassion, attention to detail, and willingness to help others. As a student, she helped me develop my skills as a pharmacist and challenged me to continue working hard in all my endeavors. I believe she is very deserving to win this award and I am thankful to have been a student on her rotation."
"She is an amazing preceptor that takes an active interest in the learning of her students."
Dr. Hopkins has been a vital person in the development of the experiential education program of the School of Pharmacy. We are grateful for her dedication to our students and to the profession of pharmacy. Congratulations Dr. Hopkins!
Preceptor Education Program

On April 15th, the School of Pharmacy hosted the annual Preceptor Education Program (PEP), previously known as our preceptor appreciation banquet. This year's event featured a casual Mexican-themed dinner and a two-hour continuing education program titled, "Dealing with Challenging Students."
The CE program was focused on four videos that featured our students playing the part of "challenging students" in various scenarios. In a round table setting, attendees were given the opportunity to share how they would handle these situations in their pharmacies or institutions. Attendees also had the opportunity to hear recommendation from a panel of four skilled and experienced preceptors: Dr. John Hoover of the VA Medical Center in Memphis, Dr. DeAnne Pace of Lexington Discount Pharmacy in Lexington, Dr. Bethany Murphy of the Jackson Clinic and Union University, and Dr. Selina Segraves of Baptist Memorial Hospital in Union City.
The entire event was not only educational, but also a lot of fun! A special thanks is due to Dr. Joy Greene, Laura Ladymon, and Janie Steinbach for the success of this event. We hope you will make plans to attend future Preceptor Education Programs.
Changes in the Office of Experiential Education

The Office of Experiential Education (OEE) is experiencing significant change this summer. In July, we will say "good-bye" to Dr. Joy Greene. Joy joined the faculty in June of 2011 as the Assistant Director of Experiential Education. Joy has brilliantly managed all of the IPPE as well as coordinated and taught in several didactic courses. Dr. Greene will be joining the faculty of High Point University as they open a new School of Pharmacy in her beloved home state of North Carolina.
Dr. Greene's contribution to Union University and to the community has not been limited to the School of Pharmacy. During her tenure at Union, she launched Joytime Ministries®, a radio and speaking ministry focused on women, wrote a newspaper column, and she taught a Sunday School class at Englewood Baptist Church, where she had her wonderful family were active members.
Joy has been an outstanding person to work with and a great example of the four core values of Union University; excellence-driven, Christ-centered, people focused, and future directed. We are saddened that Dr. Greene is leaving us so quickly, but we are thankful for the skills and talents she shared with us; and we are excited for the new opportunities that God has for her and her family.
The Office of Experiential Education Welcomes Dr. Kim Lindsey
The Office of Experiential Education (OEE) is very excited to announce that Dr. Kim Lindsey is the new Assistant Director of Experiential Education. Kim has been an invaluable faculty member at Union University since 2008 where she teaches and coordinates several courses and serves as a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Critical Care at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Her work with students was honored earlier in the year when she was selected as the Class of 2014 Faculty Preceptor of the Year.
Dr. Lindsey joins the OEE with a great deal of experience in both community and institutional practice. We are very excited that she will be part of this team. Kim is a 1996 graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy. After graduation, she served as the manager of The Rx Shoppe in Cordova, Tennessee and as a pharmacy manager for Kroger Pharmacy in Clarksville, Tennessee. In 2007, she completed an ASHP-Accredited Pharmacy Practice Residency at Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville. Then, in 2008, she completed an ASHP-Accredited Critical Care/Nutrition Support Specialty Residency at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis.
In addition to her responsibilities in the OEE, Dr. Lindsey will also be the Director of Interprofessional Education (IPE). The pharmacy profession is leading the way in the healthcare environment for health professionals to work together as a team for the betterment of the patient. ACPE accreditation standards contain numerous requirements for schools of pharmacy to teach pharmacy students about, by, and with healthcare professionals of various disciplines. With that focus in mind, Union University is making plans to develop a Center for Interprofessional Education. Because of her vast experience in multiple areas of pharmacy practice and her work in the interprofessional education efforts currently on campus, Dr. Lindsey has been named as the director of this center. Congratulations Dr. Lindsey!
