UUSOP PGY1 Residency Update
2014-2015 Resident Research Projects
Megan Caulk's project is entitled, "Pharmacy Students' Knowledge of and Beliefs Concerning Plan B® One-Step." She conducted a survey designed to gather information on how much pharmacy students know about Plan B One-Step® and how they feel about it being available over-the-counter with no age restrictions. Male and female students from each of the four pharmacy classes were surveyed, and approximately 160 responses were gathered. Comparisons are being made between the knowledge levels and opinions of respondents from the various classes. Final results are still being assessed, but Megan expects her results to show that students' opinions of Plan B One-Step® are directly influenced by their knowledge about the product.
Kyle O'Brien's project is called, "Measuring the effect of source credibility on patient's beliefs about health care information." He surveyed 291 undergraduate students of varying majors and disciplines from Union University to measure their opinions about a fictitious drug, and noted how these opinions changed depending on who was providing the drug information. He created three separate survey groups based on the information source in the survey: a physician, a pharmacist, or a health/nutrition store clerk. Kyle also measured whether or not the respondents' opinions changed once contradicting information was given to the subject. The results showed that the nutrition store clerk was significantly less powerful at affecting beliefs about medicine than the physician or pharmacist. However, there was no difference between the physician and pharmacist in this regard.
2014-2015 Residents
Ashley Pugh (Union, 2014) and Heather Folz (Campbell, 2014) joined us as new 2014-2015 PGY1 residents on July 1, 2014. Each incoming resident has an excellent academic background and extensive community pharmacy experience. They will be the first residents to train under our new Community Pharmacy Practice Residency (CPPR) model. The team at UUSOP and Kroger Pharmacy are eager to begin work with these fine candidates.
ASHP Residency Accreditation
The Community Pharmacy Practice Residency (CPPR) at UUSOP is a new model from our previous residency. The change is a result of our desire to enhance our relationship with Kroger Pharmacy, and their desire to have more resident involvement in their practice sites. As such, the residency will remain in candidate status for the coming year. We anticipate an accreditation site survey in the spring, 2015.
