Experiential Education Update

Staff Addition

The Office of Experiential Education (OEE) is very excited to announce that Carol Courtner is our new Coordinator of Experiential and Continuing Education. She joined Janie Steinbach in August as a staff member in our office. As a Coordinator of Experiential Education, Carol works primarily with Dr. Kim Lindsey-Goodrich in the management of Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs) for first and second-year students. As the Coordinator of Continuing Education, Carol is responsible for maintaining our ACPE accreditation for Continuing Education and working with the School, West Tennessee Pharmacists Association and other groups for the provision of continuing pharmacy education.

Carol has been a staff member at Union University for over ten years. Prior to joining the School of Pharmacy, Carol served as Administrative Assistant to the Senior Vice President for Enrollment Services. She is a native of Johnson City, Tennessee and a Union University graduate. She has four children, including one child who is a student at Union University. Welcome to the School of Pharmacy Carol!

Exponential Expansion of Experiential Education

As the Union University School of Pharmacy continues to attract students from across the United States, the School also continues to attract experiential education opportunities across the United States.

America

Experiential Education opportunities for our students (IPPEs and/or APPEs) are now available in 27 states (shown in red) and in two foreign countries (Canada and Honduras). This represents more than 400 preceptors at over 325 different pharmacies including independent community pharmacies, chain community pharmacies, hospitals, clinics, and a myriad of specialty practices. In 2014 alone, the School of Pharmacy added 73 new preceptors to help train our students.

Although the preceptors in Tennessee are outstanding, the expansion of experiential practice opportunities in different states allows our students to learn from other great preceptors, train at multiple locations that offer residencies or unique practice models, or to network with pharmacists in locations where they eventually want to work and live.

The School and the students are extremely grateful for every preceptor that chooses to work with our program. The quality of our preceptors is one of the tremendous strengths of our School!

We have made access to rotations across the region as easy as possible for students and the stars on the map represent locations where housing is available. We want students to focus on learning and not logistics, so we are providing housing in most of these locations at no additional cost to the student. Fully furnished dorms or apartments are available in Smyrna, Tennessee; Tupelo, Mississippi; and Memphis, Tennessee.
