UUSOP PGY1 Residency Update

ASHP Residency Accreditation

The UUSOP PGY1 Community Pharmacy Residency Program is a new model from our previous residency. The change is a result of our strategic partnership with Kroger Pharmacy, and their desire to have more resident involvement in their practice sites. As such, the residency remains in candidate status. We anticipate an accreditation site survey in the spring of 2015.

2014-2015 Residents

Praise God for our 2014-2015 residents, Ashley Pugh (Union, '14) and Heather Folz (Campbell, '14)! Both of these eager, young pharmacists are off to a terrific start. Kroger has assigned each of them the oversight of all clinical initiatives in three pharmacy locations, covering Jackson, Dyersburg, Covington, and Savannah. Their activities specifically include MTM, immunizations, health screenings, and health coaching services.

Each resident presented a poster on December 10 at the ASHP Midyear meeting in Anaheim, CA. Dr. Pugh presented, Impact of Pharmacy Work Experience and Study Time on First-year Student Pharmacists' Recall of Medication Names, a project on which she collaborated with Drs. Folz, Jones, and Kuhl. Dr. Folz presented, Development of an Outpatient, Pharmacist-Directed Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Clinic, an ongoing project she is conducting at Jackson Clinic with Drs. Byrd, Day, and Murphy. Each resident is planning to present a poster at the upcoming TSHP Midyear meeting the end of February, and at the APhA Annual Meeting in late March. Meanwhile, APhA announced in mid-January their selection of Dr. Pugh for membership on their New Practitioner Network's Awards Standing Committee.

Drs. Jones and Kuhl are leading the residents' pedagogy learning experiences. Each resident spends a month at UUSOP engaged in teaching and learning activities in both the fall and spring semesters. They will present a series of monthly "Lunch-N-Learn" seminars for faculty throughout the spring semester, each offering CE credit. Also in the spring semester, the residents will gain internal medicine practice experience at Regional Hospital, and they will each have an elective learning experience, as well.
