21 Students Attend the SRLC
Apr 12, 2010
This past weekend, 21 political science students attended the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans. The SRLC is a party activist dominated event where Republican leaders try to fire up their supporters, develop policy ideas, and prepare their activist for the coming campaign. It has also been used in the past as the start of the presidential campaign as potential candidates speak and their support is measured in a straw poll. While there, students got to hear Gov. Sarah Palin, Gov. Rick Perry (TX), Congressman Mike Pence (IN), Congressman Ron Paul (TX), Gov. Haley Barbour (MS), former Senator Rick Santorum (PA), and RNC Chair Michael Steele and were most impressed with Gov. Perry, Rep. Pence, and Sen. Santorum.
In the straw poll, the Union students were the difference between victory and defeat for Mitt Romney's one vote margin over Ron Paul. We voted for Romney because Evangelicals for Mitt sponsored our trip and we voted out of gratitude for giving us this great opportunity. Among our second place choices, Huckabee had a slight majority.
