Software Purchasing

Union students and employees are eligible to obtain academically discounted software or free software to install on personally-owned computer equipment. The software titles listed here are those identified by the university and its departments as being useful for general or discipline-specific work. (If you have questions about a personally-owned computer, get answers here.)

Note: The purchasing information provided on this site is intended to be helpful but should not be used in place of the companies' own policies and procedures. In providing links to these optional resources, the university assumes no responsibility for any problems caused during or after installation of this software.

Academically discounted software

OnTheHub: Students and employees of the university can get great discounts on software, within the bounds of certain purchasing guidelines. You can learn more by viewing the list of programs available and frequently asked questions. For pricing, immediate ordering/download or OnTheHub technical support, see Union's OnTheHub site at uu.onthehub.com.

Wolfram: Students can purchase Mathematica directly from wolfram.com for advanced mathematical work. (Employees, see the Discipline-specific software section below.)

Free software

• Productivity (word processor, spreadsheet, etc.):
  • openoffice.org (Windows only), neooffice.org (Mac only), libreoffice.org, docs.google.com
  • Some class work may require use of Microsoft Office, available in the student labs.
• Anti-virus: microsoft.com Security Essentials for Windows; iantivirus.com or Avira for Macs
• Windows spy/ad-ware removal: Windows Defender, Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition
• Discipline-specific:
  • Biology, Chemistry: Students and employees can get ChemBioDraw Ultra directly from cambridgesoft.com. This is a one-year license for use on a Windows PC or on a Mac.
  • Computer Science: Visual Studio Pro and other software development tools may be obtained from the DreamSpark program at microsoft.com
  • Math: Employees can get Mathematica directly from Wolfram, Inc.
    • Union has a Wolfram site license for Mathematica. (You do not need to verify this on Wolfram's web site.) This allows employees to get a free copy of Mathematica for home use.
    • To get Union's private Mathematica license number, visit the the Employee-only FAQs section of Union's Information Technology portal site. If you are asked to log in, type uu\ before your Union username, then type your Union password. Once you get the license number, return to this page.
    • At www.wolfram.com/siteinfo/homeuse/, enter Union's license number as the 'site activation key.' You will then select the type of license you are requesting.
    • You may choose for the software to be sent to your home e-mail address or for a disc to be mailed to you. You also may choose either Windows, Mac or Linux software and if you need Wolfram Workbench.
    • Please read the User Agreement at the bottom of that page.
    • Complete all required information on the next page of Wolfram's site.
      • For e-mail address, please specify your home e-mail address.
      • In the 'Proof of Eligibility' section, you will be asked for Union's online staff directory. Use this address: www.uu.edu/directories/facultystaff/
    • Click 'Submit'
    • All activity associated with the request will be sent to your home e-mail address.
