The portal provides information sharing and collaboration for the university's two main internal constituent groups, employees and students. Because of this, a password-based login is required to access portal.uu.edu.
To log into the portal each time, there are two options for the username.
Use the password you use for all other Union systems.
There are three kinds of sites within the portal. Constituency sites provide resources to all students or to all employees. Team sites are used by committees and groups for private small-group work. Information sites allow a department or group to share content and tools with all students and/or all employees. Learn more.
In addition to other resources described below, the portal can serve as your single point of access for your student/employee e-mail/calendar and WebAdvisor services; employees can also use it as their point of access for Datatel Colleague. In other words, once you log into the portal, you can get to these resources without having to log into each system separately each time you use them. Learn more about 'single sign-on (SSO)' access to your e-mail/calendar, WebAdvisor and Datatel Colleague.
The left column of the constituency page displays a calendar titled My Week.
In addition to SSO access to your e-mail and calendar, students and employees also have SSO access to WebAdvisor through the portal, to check grades, view financial information, etc. WebAdvisor tools appear in the right column of the constituency page. For students and employees who have used the webadvisor.uu.edu web site in the past, the interface will be different but the tools available are the same. (You can learn more about WebAdvisor by clicking its Info link under the Student or Employee Resources header on the right side of this page.)
All employees will see an Applications tab in the right column of their constituency page. They can use the UI link there to access Datatel Colleague if they have job duties requiring it. Like the e-mail/calendar access above, Datatel Colleague UI use does require a one-time setup process for SSO. (Note: If you change your Union password, you will need to update this single-sign-on password as well.) You can read about this first-time setup process by clicking that link on the Applications tab of the portal constituency page. After that setup process, you can get into Datatel Colleague via the portal without having to log into Datatel again. (You can learn more about Datatel Colleague by clicking its Info link under the Employee Resources header on the right side of this page.)
Announcements will display messages that impact a significant number of people, such as all Germantown students, all faculty and staff at all campuses, etc. Messages historically sent as mass mailings through e-mail can now be distributed here. One advantage of posting an announcement in the portal over sending an e-mail is that e-mail goes only to those people who have a university e-mail address when the message is sent. Portal announcements will be available to employees or students who join the university after the message is sent.
My Team Sites initially shows an Organization header/link if you have been assigned access to any team sites. By clicking it you will see links for any portal sites dedicated to groups of which you are a member. If you join another group that has a portal site, its site link will appear here within 24 hours after you are added into the system for membership. Team sites are explained in more detail below.
My Classes will be similar to My Team Sites but will be devoted to academic classes. This will work in conjunction with MoodleRooms, the university's new learning management system that will replace Blackboard.
UU Events and UU News gives you convenient access to stories about the university. They provide headlines linked to more information about events in the future and news about things that happened in the past, respectively. Both lists are identical to the events and news stories displayed on www.uu.edu. In addition, Event Slides are the same images shown on the large displays in the hallways on the Jackson campus.
The portal's red menu bar will organize information about many valuable resources that make up the university and our community. These are grouped into four major areas. More resources will be added to these menus in the future. Learn more
Academic Resources lists primarily student-oriented departments or areas that focus on academic development and work.
Student Resources lists primarily student-oriented departments or areas that focus on non-academic support/services.
UU Resources lists departments or areas that provide support/services for students and employees.
The Community menu will list resources that unite us a university.
Depending on how you are involved in the university, you may have access to several team sites.
Teams can have only employee members, a mix of employees and students, or mainly students (with an approved faculty/staff sponsor).
Note that team sites are not meant to substitute for LMS sites set up for university classes. (Union's current Learning Management System is Blackboard.)
To get to any of your team sites, on your constituency page (portal home page) click the My Team Sites tab, then click Organization. You will see a list of team sites for which you are a member.
To give you an idea of how a team site can be used, here are some existing team sites:
One example of an information site is Human Resources. Employees will find it listed on the portal's UU Resources menu. Initially, the HR site will contain all employee benefit information - health insurance, dental/vision coverage, retirement, etc. Future resources will include: internal forms and processes for hiring; staff development; university organizational charts.
Another example is the Academic Center's information site. Student and employees will find it listed on the portal's Academic Resources menu. This site will contain curriculum maps for every academic program's major/minor and emphasis/track/concentration. Each map represents a term-by-term list of courses that a student should take to complete a specific degree. In the past, these maps were directly available only to university employees.
