Debate Team

The Union University Debate Team will begin a full competition schedule in the Fall of '08. The team will focus primarily on Public Debate and compete in the prestigious International Public Debate Association.

The four cornerstones of the program are the same as those of the University:

The Union Debate team strives to be honorable to the Savior, a source of pride to the University, and a vehicle of service and education for all involved.

Why Should I Join?

What will be expected of me?

The Debate Team will meet once a week to handle team business, cover strategy and tactics, learn skills, research topics, etc. You are also responsible for debating at least twice weekly against other team members. You will get your topics from the coach and then debate at your convenience. Tournament participation will be based on your record in the practice rounds. No one travels without a minimum of six completed practice rounds. Scholarshipped debaters are required to participate in at least 75% of the team's competitions.

About the Coach

Web Drake

Dr. Webster F. (Web) Drake brings ten years of collegiate coaching experience to the Union Debate Team. Web has coached Public Debate, Parliamentary Debate, and Individual Events. He's competed in, judged, or worked with a variety of other forensic activities including Cross-Examination Debate, Youth Legislature, Home School Debate, Policy Debate, and Lincoln-Douglas Debate.

While in college, Dr. Drake was a highly recognized speaker, winning the Mississippi State Championship in Impromptu Speaking, Extemporaneous Speaking, and Persuasive Speaking.

After attending Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and receiving his Ph.D. from LSU, Web began his teaching career at Mississippi College where he served for 10 years. At MC, he revived their Speech and Debate Team winning multiple awards and honors along the way. Web is a past Chair of the Governing Board of the of the International Public Debate Association, a member of the Pi Kappa Delta Forensics Honor Society, and an experienced tournament host. His students have won multiple tournaments and speaker awards.
