2026 Carls-Schwerdfeger History Lectures: Steven Pincus

Steven Pincus will deliver the 29^th annual Carls-Schwerdfeger History Lecture on Monday, October 19, 2026. The afternoon lecture will be held at 2:00 p.m. and will be on “Thinking the Empire Whole.” The evening lecture will take place at 7:15 p.m. and will be on “The South Asian Origins of American Independence.” Both lectures will be held in the Grant Center and are free and open to the public.

Steven Pincus is the Thomas E. Donnelly Professor of British History and the College at the University of Chicago. He holds at Ph.D. in history from Harvard University (1990). He has held faculty positions at the University of Chicago (1993-2005; 2018-Present) and Yale University (2005-2018).

Pincus has published 4 books: (1) Protestantism and Patriotism: Ideologies and the Making of an English Foreign Policy, 1650-1668 (1996); (2) England’s Glorious Revolution: A Documentary History of the First Modern Revolution (2005); (3) 1688: The First Modern Revolution (2009); and (4) The Heart of the Declaration: The Founders’ Case for an Activist Government (2016).

Pincus has edited and contributed to 3 other books: (1) A Nation Transformed: England After the Restoration (2001); (2) Politics of the Public Sphere in Early Modern England (2007); and (3) Global Encounters in the Archives: Britain’s Empire in the Age of Horace Walpole (1717-1797) (2017).
