Engage the ancient world

The Classics major at Union University engages the history, language, philosophy, art, and literature of ancient civilizations with particular attention to Greece, Rome, and the ancient Near East, including the contexts that shaped the development of Judaism and Christianity. Students are prepared for graduate study, education, and careers requiring deep historical and cultural literacy.

What You'll Study

Classics at Union is an education in the foundations of Western thought — engaging the languages, literature, history, and philosophy of ancient Greece and Rome in a way that shapes how you read, think, and lead. It's one of the most formative disciplines a student can pursue.

At Union, classics connects you to the roots of Western thought, Christian theology, and human civilization. You’ll encounter ancient texts and ideas that have shaped the world — guided by faculty who believe that understanding the past is essential to navigating the present with wisdom and purpose.

The Classical Civilizations emphasis within the Classics major focuses on the history, culture, art, and literature of ancient Greece and Rome. Students develop a rich understanding of the ancient world and its enduring influence on Western civilization, Christian thought, and contemporary culture.

Classical Languages Track

The Classical Languages emphasis within the Classics major develops students’ proficiency in Greek and/or Latin alongside a deep engagement with ancient history, literature, and culture. Students are equipped for graduate study, biblical scholarship, theological work, and careers that require advanced language and analytical skills.
