Bob Mayo

Bob Mayo is a musician, audio engineer, producer, and educator based in Jackson, Tennessee, whose career has included extensive experience in professional music, recording, publishing, and music technology.

Before entering higher education, Mr. Mayo worked professionally in Nashville, where he was involved with a wide range of artists, songwriters, and music-industry organizations. His Nashville experience includes work associated with Clint Black, Highway 101, Daryle Singletary, Randy Travis, Dave Gibson of the Gibson/Miller Band, Holly Dunn, Lisa Stewart, Rich Mullins, Jaime Kyle, Steve Dorff, Gary Burnette, songwriter Wynn Varble and many others. He has also worked with and within the Nashville music-publishing and production community, including Famous Music Publishing, Nocturnal Eclipse Publishing, and Wrensong Publishing and Productions.

Mr. Mayo brings this professional experience into his teaching, giving students an understanding of the music industry that extends beyond the classroom. His areas of interest include audio engineering, recording and production, music technology, live sound, music performance, arranging, and contemporary music. He particularly enjoys creating hands-on learning opportunities in which students can work with professional recording equipment and develop practical skills in a real-world studio environment.

As a musician and producer, Mr. Mayo has experience performing, arranging, engineering, and producing music in a variety of styles. His work includes recording and producing Christian contemporary music as well as collaborating with artists on live and studio projects. He is passionate about the creative possibilities that emerge when musical artistry and recording technology come together.

At Union University, Mr. Mayo contributes to the university’s music program and its audio and recording initiatives. He is committed to preparing students for the rapidly changing music industry while helping them develop both the technical expertise and creative confidence necessary to pursue their own careers in music. He is also the director of the Union bluegrass ensemble Surrender, performing at both on and off campus events. Mr. Mayo is an active member of educator advisory boards for professional audio companies such as Eventide, Neumann, PSP Audioware, Oeksound, Les Paul Foundation, AEA Ribbon Microphones, and Flock Audio. He is also the faculty advisor for the Union Audio Engineering Society Student Section, connecting students with music industry professionals across the world.

Mr. Mayo holds a master’s degree of Music in Music Technology and continues to be active as a musician, producer, engineer, and educator. He considers one of the most rewarding aspects of his career to be sharing his professional experience with the next generation of musicians, producers, engineers, and music-industry professionals.

He currently lives in Jackson with his wife, Teresa, and is blessed with 5 children.
