White Hall opened to students in June 2007. It houses the
Departments of Chemistry and Biology as well as the School
of Nursing. Architects and engineers tell us it was the most
sophisticated construction project not only on the Union
campus, but in all of west Tennessee.
Some might say this is an extravagance that could have
been done on a smaller scale for less money. But at Union,
future students—whom we have yet to meet—deserve a first
class facility where they can do research, receive instruction
and prepare for the next steps in their lives.
And the great news is that White Hall is not just for science
majors! Since candidates for a bachelor’s degree are
required to take eight hours of laboratory science, nearly all
our undergraduates will be studying in this facility.
Take a look at some numbers:
- $20 million to build White Hall
- $4.2 million for a highly sophisticated
heating and AC system that replaces air
every 8 minutes
- 63,345 square feet in White Hall
- 47,085 square feet increase over previous
science allocation
- $40,000 washer for laboratory glassware
- 1400 drawers of laboratory equipment
- 750 gallon fresh water aquarium
- 66 miles of electrical wiring
- 23 miles of cabling installed by Union’s
network support department
- 7 hospital bed bays
- 4 human patient simulators
- 1 operating room
