Sandra was born in Humboldt, Tennessee on December 27, 1947. She was graduated from Gadsden High School in 1965. She attended the University of Tennessee at Martin to complete her pre-nursing courses then transferred to the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences to complete her BSN in 1969. After graduation, she spent a year in Memphis at John Gaston Hospital as a staff nurse then moved back to Jackson, Tennessee to work at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital and Crenshaw Clinic. In 1978, she completed a Master of Science degree with the emphasis on guidance and counseling at Memphis State University. In 1992, she completed a Master of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences.
She had been a faculty member at Union since 1972. She teaches in both the BSNA and BSN program tracts. She is an avid supporter of Union University Athletics.
She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, American Nurses Association, and Tennessee Nurses Association.
She is married to Doug Brown and has one son, Matt, daughter-in-law Renee, and two granddaughters, Darby Paige and Carly Grace.
