Needs for Athletic/Convocation Center
| Union has been known for many years as having one of the
region’s premier collegiate athletic programs. From the NAIA
national women’s basketball championship to perennial
conference championships in a variety of sports, Union student
athletes demonstrate a commitment to excellence on and off the
playing fields. In addition to intercollegiate athletics,
hundreds of Union students each semester are actively engaged
in intramural athletics and a host of wellness and recreation
programs. Yet present facilities are not adequate for the
university’s growing student body and future athletic success.
Union has several needs in this area: an expanded and enhanced
venue for intercollegiate athletics; improved facilities for
intramural and recreation programs for all students; and
adequate wellness and fitness facilities and programs. The
projected new Athletic and Convocation Center, to be located
on the West Campus, will answer these needs.
The multi-purpose 3,000-seat facility will significantly
strengthen Union’s athletic program, enhance campus life and
provide a venue for major campus and community events such as
the annual Scholarship Banquet (which has featured such
outstanding speakers as Lady Margaret Thatcher and Colin
Powell). The increased seating capacity will allow Union to
bring a greater diversity of speakers and concerts to the
university, as well as accommodating growing attendance for
Union’s championship sports teams. The center will also
provide expanded opportunities for growing programs in
physical education and wellness, plus sports management and
sports medicine.
The Athletic and Convocation Center is an investment in
future success for Union sports teams as well as future health
and fitness for Union students. Due to the generous lead gift
of Benny Fesmire, a member of the University’s President’s
Advisory Council and former Trustee, Union can continue making
the plans for the new center. The support of many other alumni
and friends will enable the university to bring these plans to
life.
