Preservice Teachers Recognized at Awards Day

May 23, 2011 - Preservice teachers were recently recognized for their outstanding work in the field of education at Awards Day at Union University. The Nora Smith Barker Student Teachers of the Year Award 2011 was presented to the student teacher chosen who has demonstrated the highest degree of skills and attributes considered characteristic of outstanding teachers and shows the greatest potential for professional achievement.

The Elementary Student Teacher of the Year Award was presented to Callie Davenport. The Secondary Education Student Teacher of the Year Award was presented to Anna Jones.

Union University presents the Academic Excellence Medals to the graduating senior with the highest grade point average in each discipline, provided the student’s GPA in the major is not less than 3.50. A student minoring in a discipline in which there is no qualifying major or in which no major is offered is also eligible for a medal. Emily Peden (left) received the Academic Medal for Excellence with a Major in Elementary Education, Joy Howard (center) received the Academic Medal for Excellence with a Major in Learning Foundations, and Catherine Jenkins (right) received the Academic Medal for Excellence with a Major in Special Education.

Additional preservice teachers recognized at the Awards Day included: Shannon Dempsey received the Academic Medal for Excellence with a Major in Spanish, Kristin Nettle, received the Academic Medal for Excellence with a Major in Math, and Kelsey Samples received the Academic Medal for Excellence with a Major in Music Education.
