Residence Life Traditions

Family Weekend - September 28-29, 2012

Residence Life at Union University is not just about living on campus; it is about experiencing the traditions and hallmarks that make Residence Life home to students. Find a sneak peak of our traditions below.

Freshman Year Experience Complex

Progressive Snacking is the opening event for programming in Residence Life. This event provides the opportunity for students to "progress" around to the RD and RAs apartments in their complex, tasting treats and meeting the Residence Life staff. Food and fellowship, what could be better!

Deep Fried Olympics offers friendly competition between the buildings where students dress in their best southern attire, experience real live farm animals, and compete to be the winning building in games such as Cricket Spit, Tire Throw, Shovel Pull, and much more.

S'more Giving is a tradition that encourages students to meet the needs of community members during the holidays. Weeks before the event students challenge themselves by setting aside funds which they donate the night of the event along with enjoying s'mores roasted over a bonfire. Previous S'more Givings have made it possible to feed two families for Thanksgiving and provide one family with Christmas.

Deck the Hall in McAfee Commons: Each December, students gather in the McAfee Commons in their tackiest Christmas sweaters to drink hot chocolate and decorate a 12 foot tree.

Dub Christmas Story Time: "Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse." Students gather in McAfee Commons in their pajamas to hear Dr. Dub read this special Christmas story.

Welcome Back Breakfast: This annual French toast breakfast is a warm and sweet treat for students on their way to class as Resident Advisors welcome them back for the new semester.

Mochafee brings coffee and entertainment to the student's backdoor. This event takes place in McAfee Commons which is transformed into a coffee house where students express their musical abilities through singing, guitar, piano, violin, and much more while enjoying free coffee made and creatively named by the Resident Advisors.

Girls Night: Girls just wanna have fu-un!! This night is especially designed for the ladies. No boys allowed! Girls come in their festive PJ's ready to experience a night at the spa ranging from haircuts to massages.

Guys Night: Boys will be boys! This night is especially designed for the men. Guys from each building compete in the Jalapeno Eating contest, the Winter Freeze-Out, and an X-Box tourney to see who is a man's man.

Food for Finals: At the end of each semester, students are invited to their commons each night of finals to feast on free food such as deli sandwiches, pizza, Chick-fil-a, and more.

Female Quads Residence Complex

Progressive Snacking is the opening event for programming in Residence Life. This event provides the opportunity for students to "progress" around to the RD and RA's apartments in their complex, tasting treats and meeting the Residence Life staff. Food and fellowship, what could be better!

Costume Coffee House, an event that has taken place for the past nine years, takes place on Halloween night and is the kickoff to Homecoming Week. Students come dressed in their best friendly costumes, enjoy cotton candy and caramel apples, coffee and snacks, and show off their talents in a karaoke contest.

Quad Christmas Decorating: Students join together with their roommates and neighbors to decorate their building and Quad. Then they come back to the commons while sipping hot chocolate and listening to traditional Christmas tunes.

Mugs N Kisses is the ultimate pajama party for ladies in the Quads and is famous for its hand-dipped chocolate covered strawberries and other chocolaty treats. A great time to hang out with the girls and make sweet valentines for a roomie you want to encourage, a dear friend, or special someone.

Easter EggStravaganza: Want to go back to those days of nostalgia when you put on your best Sunday dress and couldn't wait to hunt for Easter eggs, well this is even better! For Eggstravaganza ladies bring out their baskets and flashlights to hunt for Easter eggs in the dark. Fun prizes included!

Basics 101: A modern twist to Home Economics, this "class" focuses on practical skill sets that the Ladies of UU may want to improve on or learn from scratch. What better way to learn than from the faculty and staff who are passionate and skilled in these tasks. Ladies will gain knowledge in: changing a tire, cooking on a budget, recipe musts, sewing on a button or hemming clothes, "post grad must knows" (insurance, jobs/resume, 401K, and renting); ultimately seeking knowledge and practicing how to be benevolent and servant hearted.

Luau: Each Spring students are welcomed to the Quads to enjoy a day in the sun at our annual Luau. Dressed in hula skirts and Hawaiian shirts, students can join in on the how-low-contest, eat grilled chicken kabobs and fruity treats, make tropical charms, and enjoy other fun games while listening to music on steel drums and ukuleles.

Food for Finals: At the end of each semester, students are invited to their commons each night of finals to feast on free food such as deli sandwiches, pizza, Chick-fil-a, and more.

Male Quads Residence Complexes

Quads Pancake Breakfast: This breakfast treat is prepared for the students right on Memorial Walk where they can pick up a plate full of flapjacks on their way to class.

Treasure Hunt is a race where teams of four decipher clues to identify their next location. The team that arrives first in the final leg of the race is awarded a grand prize!

March Madness Bash is the perfect event for basketball fanatics and experts. Students join in the single elimination tournament, carrying on a national pastime, of choosing who will be the NCAA Men's Division I Champion.

Watters Great Outdoors is a great event for all. From folk square dance to the archery showdown you are bound to have a good ole time.

Food for Finals At the end of each semester, students are invited to their commons each night of finals to feast on free food such as: deli sandwiches, pizza, Chick-fil-a, and more.
