Department of Languages, Literature, and Writing

Read with discernment. Write with grace. Speak with truth.

Union’s Department of Languages, Literature, and Writing develops students who engage literature and language with discernment, write with precision and grace, and graduate prepared to communicate a biblical worldview across every field they enter.

A man stands at a lectern teaching a classroom of seated students. Notes on writing and literature are written on the whiteboard behind him. The students face forward, listening to the lesson attentively.
A man in a suit stands at the front of a classroom with red chairs, gesturing as he lectures on Applied Linguistics. A projector displays an image on the screen behind him while students face him attentively and take notes.

Ethos

Thoughtful voices for a world that needs them.

The world is full of noise and desperately short of voices that speak with clarity, conviction, and genuine care for truth. At Union, the Department of Languages, Literature, and Writing is committed to forming those voices. We teach students to read with discernment, to cultivate a deep understanding of both the Christian intellectual tradition and the roots of contemporary culture, to cherish the beauty and power of language and stories, and to write with the precision and grace that truth requires. Our graduates leave prepared for a lifetime of speaking into a broken and weary world with the skill, the conviction, and the love for language that this moment demands.
