Professional Degrees

Several young people position a microphone inside an open grand piano, appearing to set up for a recording in a room with plain walls and wooden door frames—an activity reminiscent of hands-on learning in a Music Technology degree or Master of Music program.

The Department offers majors leading to the Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education, Performance, Worship Leadership, Commercial Music, Music Theory, and Composition. The B.M. in Music is also offered with an Emphasis in Management or with Elective Studies in Communication Arts. Each Bachelor of Music student selects an applied principal area of study. B.M. students are required to complete the University General Core Curriculum, Core Music studies that help prepare students for advanced training in their major area of study, and the specific requirements of their chosen major. Though the BM degree is demanding, the ambitious student is not precluded from completing a double major or a minor in a second music discipline or another discipline outside of music. As shown below, Music Education majors will complete the Professional Education core in fulfilling licensure requirements. Students selecting majors in Worship Leadership or Commercial Music will take a music core that differs from the other Bachelor of Music majors.

The Bachelor of Music in Music Education at Union University prepares highly effective music educators through a curriculum grounded in musical knowledge, performance skill, and pedagogical excellence. Students develop sensitivity to diverse learning needs, a commitment to lifelong inquiry, and a Christ-centered worldview — equipping them for rewarding careers in music education.

Liberal Arts Degrees in Music

The Department of Music offers three majors leading to the liberal arts degree: a major in Music (BA or BS), a major in Worship Leadership (BA), and a major in Commercial Music (BA). Students pursuing one of the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in Music must complete the General Core Curriculum, the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science requirements. Students in these degrees can select a broader educational experience by choosing elective studies in a variety of fields or may choose to complete a minor. The student will also select a principal area of applied study within the major and successfully complete an initial audition in that area.

Minor in Music

In addition to courses and degrees in music, the Department of Music also offers the Minor in Music and the Minor in Worship Leadership. Students who have a background in music or worship leading and are majoring in other areas of study are welcome and encouraged to pursue a minor in music or worship through the Department of Music.
