Advisor/Advisee Roles & Responsibilities
The Roles/Responsibilities of the Advisor:
- Know your advisees.
- Create an atmosphere of openness, caring and concern.
- Clearly define advisor/advisee responsibilities for an
advisee.
- Assist student in planning a program consistent with
abilities and interests.
- Help student clarify values and goals.
- Be familiar with information in the student’s advising
file.
- Direct students to campus resources according to their
individual needs
- Help students in academic difficulty recognize possible
reasons for their difficulty and suggest alternative courses of action.
- Provide GPA repair counseling.
- Know Union University academic standards, policies and
procedures in sufficient detail to provide students with accurate, usable
information.
- Become familiar with FERPA.
- Study, discuss, verify, and sign advisees’ registration
form and other advisement forms.
The Roles/Responsibilities of the Advisee:
- Recognize personal responsibility for continuous
evaluation of academic progress and the ultimate responsibility for all
academic choices.
- Clarify personal values and goals.
- Become familiar with Union University academic policies,
procedures, and requirements.
- Know graduation requirements for chosen field of study
and maintain accurate, current records of progress toward those requirements.
- Know advisor.
- Initiate contact with advisor and seek help on a regular
basis.
