Advising Checklist

Before putting a course in a student’s schedule, check the following:

_____ Does the student have the prerequisites necessary to take the course?

_____ Is the student on track to complete the 39 hr. upper level requirement?

_____ Is the student the appropriate classification to take the course?

           Freshman restricted to 100 to 200 level courses

           Sophomores restricted to 100 to 300 level courses

           Juniors & Senior may take 100 to 400 level courses     

_____ Is the student taking this course for credit or audit?

           If audit, it must be indicated as (A) in the designated column on the reg. form

_____ Has the student been admitted to his program of study? (Ex. EDU, SW, NUR)

 

Other items to consider:

_____ Where does this course count? (General Core, Specific Core, Major, Minor, Elec.)

_____  Is it time for the student to make an appointment for the junior or senior degree audit? (Students should make appointments in the Academic Center. Those seeking teacher licensure will need to make an appointment with Dottie Myatt in the Education Department.)

_____  Does the student need to apply for graduation. (Students are emailed each semester that they can electronically submit graduation applications. Forms can also be picked up in the Academic Center).

_____  Does the student need to get an overload, directed study or independent study form?) (Student should obtain these in the Academic Center

·        Curriculum Maps can be found on the public drive by catalogue year.  There are separate maps with and without teacher licensure.

·        Faculty and Academic Center

·        WebAdvisor

o       ACT/SAT scores

o       Classes taken at Union

o       Transfer work and credit-by-testing

·        Other resources

o       Degree Audit (if student has one)
